An advance copy of Grace Through Fire showed up in my mailbox. A real, physical book. Not a PDF. I felt like a real book critic.
Then I read the subtitle. A Memoir of Murder, Tragedy, and Resilience. This was not going to be a light Sunday read.
The publisher reached out because I’ve commented on or reviewed a lot of books about resilient women. You know, Mel Robbins, Tara Westover, Malala Yousafzai, etc. I’m neither resilient nor a woman. But their stories draw me in with their inspiration and…well…resilience. Deborah Samuel’s story might be one of the most resilient of the bunch.
This is part of my 100 book reading goal for 2026 (Book #69)

Grace Through Fire Book Summary
In a small Arkansas home, Deborah’s elderly mother shoots Deborah’s abusive father. That’s not the climax. That’s the setup. What follows is a media circus, murder trials, and Deborah trying to hold a broken family together. Then a second tragedy hits even closer to home when her wife is paralyzed.
Add chronic illness, money trouble, and a few personal demons. Samuel is honest about the stretches where she wasn’t handling things well.
But this isn’t a misery parade. She finds her way back through yoga, travel, and a lot of time on the water at places like Lake Powell and Crater Lake. It’s a story about rebuilding a life. Not the one she planned. Maybe a better one.

My Grace Through Fire Rating
My innovative system for rating humor books is explained here
Overall Awesomeness: 5/5

Deborah Samuel opens the book with the story of her mother killing her abusive father. And it somehow gets more dramatic from there. Easy to stay invested through the whole book!
Things I Liked

- The drama. I don’t usually like drama, but apparently I make exceptions when it’s someone else’s life and I can read about it from the safety of my recliner.
- The hope. This book tackles some incredibly heavy subjects, yet somehow manages to be uplifting. That’s not easy to pull off.
- The reinvention. Just when you think Deborah’s life can’t take another turn, it does. And she keeps finding a way forward.
Things I Didn’t Like

- The drama. Yes, I realize I also listed this under Things I Liked. I’m a complicated man.
- Yoga. I don’t like yoga. I don’t think my body was designed to bend in those directions.
- Kayaking. Looks peaceful until you remember you’re sitting in a tiny plastic (or INFLATABLE) boat that can tip over at any moment. Nope.
The One Thing I’m Taking With Me
Deborah had a big plan for life, including a dream home by the lake. Then, in an instant, it was gone.
She never got that life back. Instead, she built a completely different one.
Sometimes the life you never planned turns out to be better than the one you dreamed of.

What’s a plan of yours that fell apart and turned out better anyway? Bonus points if it involves a kayak.
