Ever picked up a book and wondered if you can actually finish it before your flight lands? Or before your kids wake up? Or before you fall asleep and lose your page for the fourth time this week?
Enter the title below and find out exactly how long it’ll take you. Tino will also have thoughts. He always does.

How does the reading time calculator work?
You enter a book title, and the tool pulls the page count from Google Books. It multiplies pages by the average words per page (around 250), then divides by your reading speed. Adjust the slider to match how you actually read — or how fast you wish you read, which is between you and the slider.
What’s a normal reading speed?
The tool defaults to 300 words per minute, which is solidly average for adult recreational reading. But it varies more than people realize:
- Slow / careful reader: 150–200 wpm — a 100-page book takes 4–5 hours
- Average reader: 250–300 wpm — a 100-page book takes about 2.5–3 hours
- Fast reader: 400–500 wpm — under 2 hours
- Speed reader: 600+ wpm — under an hour
Worth noting: reading speed matters a lot less than whether you’re actually enjoying the book. Nobody’s handing out trophies for finishing fast.
How long does it take to read popular books?
Here’s a quick reference at average reading speed (300 wpm):
| Book | Est. Reading Time | Tino’s Take |
|---|---|---|
| Me Talk Pretty One Day | ~4.5 hours | Acceptable. |
| Dad Is Fat | ~3.5 hours | Fine. I guess. |
| A Man Called Ove | ~5 hours | More of a dog book, honestly. |
| Harry Potter & the Sorcerer’s Stone | ~7 hours | Where’s the cat protagonist? |
| War and Peace | ~60 hours | No. — Tino |
What affects how long it takes to read a book?
The calculator gives you a solid estimate, but your actual reading time depends on a few real-world factors:
- Subject familiarity. You’ll read a book about something you already know faster than dense unfamiliar material. This is why that 400-page thriller disappears in a weekend but the business book has lived on your nightstand for eight months.
- Format. Physical books, ebooks, and audiobooks all have different rhythms. Most people listen to audiobooks at 1.2x to 1.5x speed — the calculator shows 1x as a baseline.
- Time of day. Bedtime reading is slower. This is a fact of human biology and also why you’ve reread the same page four times.
- Whether your cat is sitting on the book. Adds time. Significantly.
About Tino
Tino is Scott’s cat and self-appointed reading consultant. He has read zero books but has sat on hundreds of them, which he considers equivalent. He works for kibble and occasional chin scratches. His literary opinions are strong and largely unsolicited. He stands behind his audiobook search results to the extent that a cat can stand behind anything.

About Scott:
I’m Scott Johnson. I write humor essays, review books, and maintain a long-term reading project because why not. I built this tool because I kept wondering how long books would take me to read and figured other people were doing the same math.
