Like many others, I only knew Mindy Kaling as Kelly Kapoor the ditzy, mildly annoying character from the Office. (Sorry, Mindy.) When I picked up this book, I expected roughly the same persona. I was very wrong. Kaling is thoughtful, sweet, complex, brilliant and seriously funny. Here is my “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me” review.

“Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)” Summary

Mindy Kaling’s book “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)” is a humorous memoir that combines personal anecdotes, observations on life, and her journey to success in Hollywood. The book is divided into a series of essays where Kaling reflects on her childhood, friendships, career, and her experiences in the entertainment industry. It captures her witty, self-deprecating humor and touches on topics like body image, relationships, and the pressures of being a woman in showbiz. Overall, it’s a lighthearted and relatable read, offering insight into Kaling’s personality and the challenges she faced on her path to fame. This book was first published in 2011.

Who is Mindy Kaling?

Mindy Kaling is an American actress, comedian, writer, and producer. She first gained widespread recognition for her work on the U.S. television series The Office, where she played the character Kelly Kapoor. In addition to acting on the show, Kaling was also a writer, executive producer, and director for several episodes, making her one of the few female writers in the early days of the series.

After The Office, Kaling created and starred in her own show, The Mindy Project, which aired from 2012 to 2017. The show was a critical and commercial success, further establishing her as a significant figure in television comedy.

Kaling has also been involved in various other projects, including acting roles in films like The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Ocean’s 8, and A Wrinkle in Time. She has written several books, including her memoir “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)” and “Why Not Me?”, both of which became bestsellers.

Kaling is known for her sharp wit, relatable humor, and her efforts to bring more diversity to Hollywood, both in front of and behind the camera.

Mindy Kaling is also psychic or extremely persuasive. Remember how I told you this memoir was first published in 2011? Well, check out the line below taken from her chapter “Strict Instructions for My Funeral.” Theoretically, this was written in 2011 or prior. (WHHAAAT?) Why is no one talking about this?

Now onto the rating of “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?”

My innovative system for rating humor books is explained here

Wholesomeness Score: 4/5

Some swears (occasional F-bombs). A bit of sex talk. But Kaling’s wholesome personality shines through, bumping up my (somewhat arbitrary) wholesomeness rating. She is a likeable, hard-working, positive role model – especially for young women. Her book has several encouraging messages about body positivity, self-acceptance, and fostering healthy friend and family relationships.

Hilarity Score: 4/5

Mindy Kaling is a comedy nerd.

Overall Book Awesomeness Score: 4.5/5

I really liked this book. It’s light-hearted and super easy to consume. There are definitely some deep topics (like race, body image.) But her down-to-earth, relatable style was refreshing and allowed her to serve up those difficult topics with ease.

Things I liked:

  • Mindy Kaling
  • Her positive, down to earth attitude
  • She finds celebrity roasts cringy (Like, I KNOW!! Why would anyone subject themselves to such accurate negativity??)

Things I didn’t like:

  • Crap, now I have to go binge “The Office” again

Conclusion: Final Thoughts on “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)” review

A fun, easy-to read memoir, but also just kind of a collection of disconnected essays with general themes of friendship, Hollywood and a bit of romance mixed in.
