Confession time: until about a week ago, I had no idea who Leanne Morgan was. I was scrolling my library app for some nonfiction humor (as I’m known to do.) Morgan’s audiobook What in the World popped up. I hit play on this seemingly random Leanne Morgan book, only to discover she’s not some unknown author at all. Apparently, she’s a full-blown stand-up comic with Netflix specials and a massive following. Basically, everyone else in America already knew this in 2025. I’m just late to the party (again.)
Here is my What in the World book review:

What in the World by Leanne Morgan Book Summary
Full Title: What in the World?!: A Southern Woman’s Guide to Laughing at Life’s Unexpected Curveballs and Beautiful Blessings
Leanne Morgan’s book, What in the World is basically her stand-up comedy put to paper (or, in my case, audiobook). She riffs on everyday life: raising kids, getting older, marriage quirks, and Southern livin’. She also shares her unlikely path to comedy stardom, which started with her selling jewelry at living room parties! The book’s tone is warm, clean (wholesome!), and conversational.
Morgan gives anecdotes about growing up in Tennessee, where her family ran the grocery store. She spends plenty of time talking (laughing, complaining) about perimenopause, parenting, and marriage. Sprinkles of her Christian faith give the book an additional layer of sincerity, making it more than a collection of silly jokes.

Who is Leanne Morgan?
I’m glad you asked — because until I stumbled on her audiobook, I didn’t know either. So maybe I’m not the only clueless one? Leanne Morgan is a stand-up comedian from Tennessee who built a huge following with her clean, Southern-flavored humor about everyday life: parenting, marriage, getting older, etc. She’s had a Netflix special, Netflix sitcom (new in 2025!), sells out theaters, and now writes books that sound a lot like her stage act. (Funny, relatable, and not dripping with f-bombs every other line).
So if you’re like me and somehow missed the memo, just know she’s a pretty big deal in the comedy world. And now apparently in the book world too.

Now onto the rating! What in the World by Leanne Morgan Book Review:

My innovative system for rating humor books is explained here
Wholesomeness Score: 5/5

This is about as wholesome as comedy gets without crossing over into “boring.” Leanne Morgan keeps it clean, family-friendly, and still manages to be genuinely funny. She occasionally talks about sex, aging bodies, and uses the curse-alternative “butt-hole” frequently. But nothing is ever graphic or offensive, unless of course, you are a butthole.
Hilarity Score: 4/5

Leanne Morgan is funny. Her Southern drawl and timing carry a lot of the humor, especially in the audiobook. However, stand-up energy doesn’t always translate perfectly into book form. Plenty of laughs, but it’s not quite the same as watching her on stage with an audience feeding the momentum. (I binged several of Morgan’s stand-up video clips after discovering this audiobook.)
Overall Book Awesomeness Score: 5/5

Clean, wholesome comedy. That’s my jam. I loved Morgan’s Southern drawl and her signature catchphrases (“butthole,” “WHAT IN THE WORLD?!”) delivered straight from her own mouth in the audiobook. It was funny, relatable, and every so often even inspirational. Basically, everything I want when I go looking for humor.
Things I liked:

- That intoxicating Southern drawl (audiobook is a must!)
- Signature catch phrases: WHAT IN THE WORLD?! Butthole. Take to the bed.
- clean humor
- Inspiration that it’s never too late to make it as an artist! (I’m younger than Leanne Morgan, so I still have time.)
- A sprinkling of Morgan’s Christian faith, woven in naturally without feeling preachy.
Things I didn’t like:

- Her husband Chuck Morgan (usually referred to as “Chuck Morgan”) is so often the butt(hole) of Leanne Morgan’s jokes, that I’m not sure if she actually likes him.
Conclusion: What in the World Book Review
Before this, I’d never even heard of Leanne Morgan. Now I’m wondering how I missed her completely. What in the World?? (Yes, I said that in her voice.) The audiobook gave me clean, funny, Southern-flavored comedy. If you’re new to her like I was, this book is a great introduction. And if you’re already a fan, you knew she was hilarious long before I finally caught up. And probably already read her book.
