“You’re Leaving When?” Book Review

Youre-Leaving-When-Book-Review

You might be thinking, “Scott, why are you reading and reviewing a memoir about a mid-fifties, recently divorced Los Angelean who talks about her adventures with menopause, financial struggles, and navigating the world of a newly gender-fluid child“? Well first of all, that was a really long question to ask me. And secondly, because I found “You’re Leaving When? Adventures in Downward Mobility” in a local “Little Free Library“. The book synopsis suggested it was a funny read. Below is my book review of “You’re Leaving When – Adventures in Downward Mobility”

And I’m on a mission to read all the funny books!

What is “You’re Leaving When? Adventures in Downward Mobility” About?

“You’re Leaving When? Adventures in Downward Mobility” by Annabelle Gurwitch is a candid memoir that chronicles her journey through the challenges and humorous moments of financial instability. Gurwitch, an actress and writer, finds herself facing unexpected economic downturns. She navigates the world of gig economy jobs, subletting her home, and living with uncertainty about the next chapter of her life. Through her experiences, she sheds light on the struggles many Americans face in an increasingly volatile financial landscape.

Throughout the book, Gurwitch offers sharp observations on the pressures and stigmas associated with “downward mobility”. Her narrative is both a personal account and a broader commentary on the shifting economic realities that define modern life. It’s a relatable and thought-provoking read for anyone who has faced financial challenges.

Now to my rating of “You’re Leaving When – Adventures in Downward Mobility”

My innovative system for rating humor books is explained here

Wholesomeness Score: 3/5

A bit of profanity, candid discussions about sex, dating, drug use and living with indoor rabbits. (Which may be highly offensive to some people.) Certainly not shockingly un-wholesome content. But enough to cause a wee bit of cringing if you are reading to your Grandmother.

Hilarity Score: 3.5/5

I love a good collection of humor essays. Extra points for self-deprecating tales of growing older. Personally, the thought of renting out your house to strangers (the one you CURRENTLY LIVE IN) is absolutely terrifying. Gurwitch recounts her experiences in sharing her home with grace, humility and hilarity. Still terrifying.

Overall Book Awesomeness Score: 3/5

Admittedly, I am not the target audience Gurwitch intended for this book. I can relate to may of her tales of struggle. But if I were mid-fifties, divorced woman going through menopause, living in the financially hectic landscape that is California…it likely would have hit closer. I enjoyed it and plan on reading her other offerings!
