I found Here for It while browsing nonfiction humor on my library app. Luckily, I’d already read and thoroughly enjoyed another book by R. Eric Thomas (Congratulations, The Best Is Over.) Otherwise, I may have ignored this title entirely. I’m glad I didn’t.
This is a humor essay collection, but it’s also an identity memoir. Thomas writes about growing up as a gay, Black, Christian man who never quite feels like he fits anywhere. Instead of turning that into something heavy or depressing, he delivers it as sharp, self-aware, snarky comedy.

Now onto the rating! Here For It – Book Review:

My innovative system for rating humor books is explained here
Wholesomeness Score: 3/5

There’s a bit of swearing and frank discussion of racism, sexuality, and faith. However, the stories underneath are thoughtful, generous, and relatable. Nothing feels edgy just for the sake of it.
Hilarity Score: 5/5

Consistently funny. Snarky without being mean.
Overall Book Awesomeness Score: 5/5

Smart, funny, and emotionally honest. I loved the randomness of some essays (possessed Christmas decorations, Grover from Sesame Street, the Dewey Decimal System), but underneath it all runs a consistent theme of not quite fitting in. Ironically, that’s what makes the book so relatable.
Things I liked:

- The audiobook is excellent. Hearing R. Eric Thomas read his own work adds timing, emphasis, and full snark that it was meant to have.
- The essays are consistently funny, not just occasional chuckle-funny.
- Even though Thomas writes a lot about not fitting in, he somehow makes himself deeply relatable.
- Humor essays! I love snack-sized bites of literature.
Things I didn’t like:

- Honestly, not much.
Conclusion: Here For It Book Review
Here for It is funny, self-aware, and honest. R. Eric Thomas manages to write about not fitting in while somehow making himself extremely relatable.
